Audubon Owl Prints

Add a touch of class to your walls with one of these fine art owl prints by 19th century artist John James Audubon.

John James Audubon was born in France in 1785, being the son of a seagoing captain and his lover. From a very young age, Audubon expressed a passion for natural history, encouraged by his father. In 1803 he migrated to the United States of America in the aim of escaping conscription into the Napoleonic Wars.

Once in the USA he supervised a farm near Philadelphia owned by his family. During this time he was able to develop his interest in nature futher and organised the first ever ringing of birds on the American continent. He tied threads to the leg of Eastern Phoebe birds and realised that they came back to nest in the same places every year.

After several years of success in Pennsylvania and in Kentucky, he went bankrupt, which resulted in him spending a short time in prison in 1819. It is possible that during his custody he developed his ambitious plan to list all of the bird species in America, including our owl friends, and to follow with more ardour his study of nature and the practice of painting.

In the spring of 1821 travelled to New Orleans where he lived for some months. The next summer he journeyed further upstream to work in Louisiana for a planter's family as an art teacher and to explore birds in their habitat there.

Not having any other income, he got by financially by selling his artwork while his wife, Lucy, worked as tutor for children of rich landowners. He spent much time seeking a publisher in Philidelphia for his bird art, but unsuccessfully, undoubtedly partly because he had earned some enmity from the members of the Academy of Natural Sciences who were the city's leading scientific experts.

Finally, in 1826 he disembarked to London with his portfolio. The British could not get enough of his pictures of America wildlife and forestry. His success was immediate and he was celebrated as "the American Woodsman". He was able to obtain enough money to publish "The Birds of America" between 1830 and 1839. This work, remarkable for the accuracy of details and for the beauty of artistic execution, comprised four volumes containing 435 full-size handpainted drawings. King George IV counted among Adubon's most ardent admirers, and he was elected member of the Royal Society,

Whilst he was in Edinborough seeking subscrbers for his book, he performed a demonstration of his methods. One of the spectators was a certain Charles Darwin who later went on to mention Audubon three times in his Origin of Species, as well as in later publications.

Helped in part by his personal popularity econimic success followed, and hving reached a certain prosperity, Audobon undertook several further expeditions through North America and settled finally in New York in a house by the Hudson which is today called Audubon park. In 1842, he published in the USA a popular edition of The Birds of America.

In his last years Audubon became noticeably senile. He undertook his last expedition in 1843. With the help of the lutherianian pastor John Bachman, he undertook a study of the description of mammals, known as The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America, which appeared in New York in 1850. The book was eventually finished by his sons and his wife.

John James Audubon died in 1851. He was buried in the Trinity cemetery at the crossing of the 155th Street and of Broadway, in the district of Harlem in New York, where is an imposing monument stands in his honour.

As well as its zoological usefulness, The Birds of America continues to impress with its artistic imagery. A copy of the book achieved at a Christie's auction in March, 2000 the record price of more than $8.8 million US dollars, which makes it the world's most expensive book.

Snowy Owl Snowy Owl

Snowy Owl Giclee Print by John James Audubon. The breeding ground of the magnificent snowy owl (latin name Nyctea scandiaca) lies across northern Alaska and Canada, where the lemming is its staple food, supplemented by ptarmigan, fish and hare. A persistent hunter, it spends much time on lookouts like banks, knolls, boulders and and dunes along the sea. Periodic epidemics decimate the lemmings and seem to account for the bird's southward flight, which gives Stateside birders a chance to see this large, white inhabitant of the tundra.

Audubon gave these birds the only nocturnal setting found in The Birds of America. He used pencil to portray the owl's soft, downy feathers. Product size approximately 18 x twenty-four inches.
